The Brief

Organize and design the interior layout of a book centered on Frederick Douglass’s impact on civil rights. Focus on clear text hierarchy, readability, and structured composition to present historical content in a way that is both accessible
and engaging.

The Solution

Designed the interior layout for a book on Frederick Douglass’s impact on civil rights, organizing the text using a two-column grid with a 12pt baseline and 18pt leading for readability and structure. To enhance the project, I created a dust jacket featuring the raised fist holding a pen—symbolizing the power of words in the fight for justice. This addition reinforces the book’s themes, connecting Douglass’ legacy to modern civil rights movements.

Grid System

For this project, I worked with a two-column grid to keep everything structured and easy to read. I set a 12pt baseline grid with 18pt leading, which gave the text a nice flow without feeling too cramped. The images fit neatly into the grid, making sure everything felt balanced and visually connected.

Design Details

The dust jacket design uses bold, high-contrast imagery to highlight the power of words in the fight for justice. The central symbol—a raised fist gripping a fountain pen—is inspired by the Black Lives Matter movement, connecting past and present struggles for civil rights. This imagery reinforces the book’s themes, showing how activism and advocacy have always been intertwined with the written and spoken word.
